For people in the East, the crowing of a rooster is a very familiar sound signaling the start of a new day. This sound is due to the unique biological system of roosters. However, the Ayam Ketawa is a breed of chicken known for its clear crowing, which surprisingly resembles human laughter.

The Laughing Chicken of Indonesia (Ayam Ketawa) or the Money God Chicken (Ayam Raja) is nicknamed as such because only the aristocrats were allowed to raise these roosters. They are a breed of chicken originating from Indonesia.

In the past, the Ayam Ketawa breed was considered a symbol of power for the “Buginese” royal family.

These special chickens are no different from regular domestic chickens, but the difference becomes apparent when they crow.

Instead of the typical “cock-a-doodle-doo,” these Indonesian roosters produce a sound that resembles human laughter. This unique crowing has made the Ayam Ketawa chickens famous worldwide.

To date, the origins of this unique “laughing chicken” remain unclear. It is believed that they are the result of crossbreeding various types of chickens in Indonesia until this distinctive crowing was achieved.

It is estimated that the Ayam Ketawa chicken has existed for around 350 years. Currently, this breed is protected in Indonesia due to their declining population.

Interestingly, this breed of chicken does not produce the “laughing” sound naturally but must undergo a special training process. Each trainer has their own method, resulting in each Ayam Ketawa chicken having a unique “laugh”.

In fact, there are two types of “laughing chickens.” Among them, Dangut is the more expensive variety, with a rapid sound resembling a machine gun. These special Dangut chickens are sold for tens of thousands of dollars.

Every year in Indonesia, there are crowing contests for “laughing chickens” that attract many participants.
