Tens of thousands of fans dancing and jumping during Taylor Swift’s show created seismic waves

Experts from Caltech (California Institute of Technology) and UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) have published a report titled “Shake to the Beat: Exploring the Seismic Signals and Stadium Response of Concerts and Music Fans”. In this study, it was revealed that concerts within The Eras Tour framework by Taylor Swift, with tens of thousands of fans participating, caused seismic waves.

Specifically, during one of the six concerts held at the SoFi Stadium (USA) in August 2023, experts set up motion sensors about 5.5 miles (approximately 8.9 km) from the venue. The results showed a seismic event with an intensity of 0.851 occurred when 70,000 fans danced along to the rhythm of Taylor Swift’s hit song “Shake It Off”. A similar phenomenon also occurred when the singer performed the song “Love Story” with significant amplitude.

Concerts within The Eras Tour, featuring the participation of tens of thousands of fans, have caused seismic events.

In a concert held at Lumen Field in Seattle, USA, in July 2023, Taylor Swift and her fans generated a seismic event equivalent to a 2.3 Richter scale earthquake. The term “Swift quake” officially originated from this incident. It is noted that not only Taylor Swift but also concerts by Beyoncé, Metallica, and Morgan Wallen have caused minor earthquakes.
