Saudi Arabia has ambitions to recruit Haaland and Mbappe

Saudi Pro League (SPL) clubs are set to spend heavily to bring in top-performing stars.

Saudi Arabia aims to create a world-class tournament.

Michael Emenalo, the CEO of SPL, stated that Saudi Arabia’s ambition is to create an “absolute top-class tournament” that would attract players like Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe who wish to compete there.

“It’s a special product, a special stage. Whenever there’s an opportunity, we’ll recruit the best players. We want to be the best league in the world,” Emenalo asserted to The Telegraph.

He claimed that Al Hilal had made a world-record bid of £260 million last year for Mbappe, which PSG accepted. However, the deal fell through as the forward preferred joining Real Madrid.

Up until now, SPL’s successful signings have included Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and Neymar, all nearing the end of their peak careers.

Players like Mohamed Salah, Alisson, Casemiro, or De Bruyne are viewed as potential high-profile arrivals in SPL during the summer of 2024. “These are the types of players who will significantly improve what we’re trying to build in the league,” Emenalo added.

Additionally, SPL aims to attract top-tier coaches. Jose Mourinho, currently without a job, is a possible candidate.

After spending £767 million to acquire 94 foreign players last summer, Emenalo emphasized that extravagant signings will not be prevalent in this transfer window.

He explained: “Clubs are required to focus on building a quality product on the field. We want to bring in top stars to elevate the league but also develop our own players.”

Ultimately, Emenalo affirmed that SPL will strive to create a competitive environment and provide the best football experience in the Middle East, thereby avoiding scenarios like Lionel Messi rejecting SPL to join the MLS.
