Fossilized dinosaur footprints from the early Cretaceous period, approximately 120 million years ago, have just been discovered in the mountainous region of Dinosaur Town, Luefeng City, Yunnan Province, China.

Fossilized dinosaur footprints at the scene.

According to experts from the Dinosaur Fossil Research and Conservation Center in Lufeng City, this recent discovery of dinosaur footprints is significant in both quantity and diversity, setting a new record with over 400 fossilized footprints found in the area. The rock strata containing these footprints are estimated to be around 120 million years old.

Vuong Dao, the head of the Dinosaur Fossil Research and Conservation Center, stated that the discovered footprints belong to three different species of dinosaurs. Lufeng City, particularly the town of Dinosaur Hill, is known for its concentration of dinosaur fossils. However, this large and diverse discovery of footprints is unprecedented, suggesting the presence of numerous dinosaur species in Lufeng.

It is speculated that the area may have been located near a water body surrounded by dense vegetation, where dinosaurs left their footprints in the mud while drinking water.

Since 1938, over 120 dinosaur fossils have been unearthed in the Lufeng area. This recent discovery is crucial in demonstrating the existence of a large and diverse dinosaur community in Lufeng during the Early Cretaceous period, as well as for future paleontological research in the region. Ongoing surveys and related studies are currently underway.
