The Reasons Behind Selena Gomez’s Absence from the 2024 Met Gala

Selena Gomez was sorely missed on the 2024 Met Gala red carpet but she had a good reason for skipping! According to a source, the 31-year-old singer and actress did not attend the biggest fashion show because she was busy with work. The multi-hyphenate is currently juggling new music, her Rare Beauty empire and filming Only Murders in the Building’s “star-studded” fourth season, so she was (unfortunately!) occupied during the May 6 event. She also has a big red carpet moment coming later this month the Emilia Perez Cannes premiere.

And, mirroring the absence of stars at the gala itself, Gomez found herself in esteemed company. Style icons such as Rihanna, Katy Perry, and the singer’s close friend Taylor Swift were notably missing from this year’s iconic New York City event.

The “Umbrella” singer — who planned to attend the gala and even teased her look! had to skip after falling ill, while Perry and Swift, like Gomez, were busy with work.

At her debut Met Gala appearance in 2014, the former Wizards of Waverly Place star graced the iconic steps of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in a captivating wine-colored, mermaid-style gown designed by Diane von Furstenberg. She elevated the floor-length evening ensemble with an icy eye makeup, deep plum lipstick, and dangling silver earrings, effortlessly complementing her sleek updo.

Returning for her second Met Gala in 2015, the “Naturally” singer captivated audiences once again, this time adorned in a custom ivory gown crafted by Vera Wang. Paired with a matching flower headpiece, her ensemble exuded elegance and sophistication on the prestigious red carpet.

In 2016, Selena Gomez embraced a notably more relaxed aesthetic for the event, which carried the theme “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.” Opting for a high ponytail and an ensemble by Louis Vuitton, Gomez exuded effortless chicness on the prestigious red carpet.

The focal point of her ensemble was a cream-colored gown from the brand’s Fall 2016 collection. Customized with sequins and elevated with a black leather bodice overlay, Gomez added an edgy touch with lace-up boots and accessorized with a boxy clutch, completing her modern and sophisticated look.

In 2017, Selena Gomez made a memorable red carpet appearance alongside her then-boyfriend, The Weeknd (she is currently dating producer and chef Benny Blanco), donning a stunning cream and floral gown by Coach.

The Disney alum effortlessly complemented the dainty dress, adorned with delicate floral embroidery, lace trim, and a thigh-high front slit, with a matching handbag and a dazzling Tiffany & Co. choker, exuding elegance and sophistication on the prestigious red carpet.

The following year, which marked her most recent Met Gala appearance, Selena Gomez stunned in what could be considered her most memorable look to date.

While her sheer gown, another creation from Coach, undoubtedly stood out in the “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination” themed event, it was her tan, the result of a slight beauty blunder, that inadvertently stole the show.

Reflecting on her unusually tan complexion during a 2021 Vogue Beauty Secrets video, Selena Gomez candidly revealed that it was the result of applying too much tanning lotion.

Upon seeing a photo of herself at the gala, Gomez humorously recalled thinking, “I am completely orange.” She shared this revelation in the video with a laugh, acknowledging the mishap and anticipating the potential criticism: “I was like, ‘This is going to be terrible because I’m going to get eaten alive about this.’ “
